The Bed Bug Epidemic Is Back!

Sleep tight and don't let the Bed Bugs bite! These were words your mom, your grandmother and for sure her mother spoke as she was putting the children to bed. Bed Bugs during the 20th century were as common as fleas on a dog's back. Virtually every home was infested and both the rich and poor alike suffered. It wasn't until WWII that relief came in the form of DDT. DDT was given to our troops to combat head lice and a by-product of this treatment was that it killed Bed Bugs. After WWII the American public's living condition started improving and one of the things they demanded was "no bugs". This is when the pest control industry started taking off and one of the first pest that we had to get rid of were Bed Bugs. Within just a few short years DDT had literally killed off the Bed Bug problem in North America and now that DTT is no longer available the Bed Bugs are back!

In the early 90's the Bed Bug problem started re-appearing. At first the outbreaks were isolated on the east and west coast in New York and Los Angeles but since then they have spread across the country like wild fire. "Why" did they come back and "how" did they get here are the questions most ask and the answers are easy. This is where the food is and they are moved around the world on and in our luggage as we travel and in the goods we import.

What do they look like? Bed Bugs are wingless parasites that feed on blood. They are flat, about a 1/4 inch long as adults. They are deep brown to burnt orange and once they feed they are blood red to black. The immature insects look just like the adults and when they hatch they are about the size of a pencil dot.

Can they infect us with diseases? Bed Bugs are known to carry many diseases but there are no reported cases where they have transmitted diseases to people.

How will I know if I am infested? Most people don't know until the bug population gets up into the thousands. Bed Bugs only feed at night and usually wait until you are asleep. You rarely feel their bite because as they pierce your skin they inject saliva into you which contains a numbing agent. You may or may not have a reaction to their bite but if you are one of those who are allergic to Bed Bug bites you could look you rolled in a Fire Ant mound every morning. Most people first realize they have Bed Bug infestation when they can't get the "spots" out of their sheets. The spots are dried blood.

Can't you just spray them like roaches and they go away? NO. These insects are able to hide in the smallest of places and killing them is very difficult. When we schedule a Bed Bug service we block out four (4) hours for two (2) men, the first trip. When we have completed the treatment the room will look like a tornado had gone through. Most pesticides only last about 90 days and the Bed Bugs can stay hidden for 12+ months without feeding. One treatment is rarely enough and follow up service is usually necessary.

What are the treatment options? There are five. You can use steam, heat, freezing, fumigation or chemicals. The freezing method is experimental, the steam method is limited to spot treatments, the heat method will work but heating up and entire home is difficult and costly. Fumigation will kill everything thing inside your home but like the heat method it to is expensive. The least expensive and most effective control method is to use chemicals. Only chemicals can give you the residual protection that is so important for long term control.

How can you protect yourself on vacation and when you get home? Assume that everywhere your staying has a Bed Bug problem. I don't care if it is a "hole in the wall" motel to the "Ritz", your room could be infested. Upon entering your room leave your suitcases at the door. Strip everything off the bed and use your flashlight to look for bugs, dirty spots (fecal material), or dried blood stains. The bed is usually where you will find evidence of Bed Bugs but they can be anywhere in the room. Try to keep your luggage elevated and always place your luggage in tightly seal plastic bag. If you can, live out of your bags. Do not put your things in the closets or dressers and do not reuse the plastic bags, leave the old and use a new one at your next stop.

When you get home unpack outside and inspect your clothes and the suitcases. Don't put your clothes on the floor, your bed or in a hamper. Take them directly into the washer/dryer or to the cleaners (in a plastic bag). FYI, Bed Bugs are killed at temperatures above 120 degrees. Put your clothes in the dryer, on high heat, for one hour. If you find bugs on or in your suitcase throw it away. If you want to gamble with keeping it seal it in a black plastic bag and place in the hot sun all day. This may and I stress may, elevate the temperature high enough to kill the bugs. Upon removing the bag scrub it with soap and water and then treat it with a good
pesticide.

Bed Bugs are Bad Dudes. They are expensive to control and you can expect to have problems for a year or longer. Treating for Bed Bugs is not a do-it-yourself project and the company you hire should have a great deal of Bed Bug experience. And you; your going to need patience and a lot of it.

If you have watched any news on TV, then you have likely heard reports on the latest bed bug infestation that is happening all over the USA and other countries.

Bed Bugs are nasty little pest that hide during the day and come out at night to feast on mammals. That mammal could likely be you sleeping in a room that has become a bed bug dinning hall. Bed bugs seldom if ever bite cats or dogs even if they sleep in your bed.

These are reddish brown, flat, egg shaped bugs that are around the size of an apple seed. They are attracted to heat and carbon dioxide, two things that a sleeping human can't do anything to control. So from about World War 2 until now, you seldom ever heard about bed bugs in the United States. I for 1 am happy that I have not encountered the little monsters. Now it seems more and more places in the USA are finding the creatures of the night bugs are back. Many hotels, hospitals, and apartments are reporting infestations of bed bugs. It is believed that most have been carried in from other countries by outside travelers. They hide away in the suitcases of travelers until they get unpacked and dropped in a new place. Where as many people traveling may think the only animals in their bags are plush animals, they have no idea that they are bring home an unwanted guest.

Getting rid of these dastardly pest is another problem. Obviously, DDT is not an option. Bats won't eat them...not that you would want to bring a family of bats into your home but, it was a thought. The good news is that the bed bug does have some natural predators. Cockroaches, mites, ants, centipedes, and spiders will eat them.

Ok, so maybe that is only good news if you are the Adams Family and have those other bugs for pets. Me, I'd rather keep all of them out.

There has been research done on killing bed bugs with such natural ingredients as Neem Oil, Black Cohosh, tobacco, eucalyptus, and even cannabis.

One of the other natural things you can try that does work well on ants and perhaps, bed bugs is diatomaceous earth. It is said to cut into in the hard exoskeleton which leads the bug to die of dehydration.

Here are a few other things you might do to help cut down or kill as many of the pest as possible, even after contacting an exterminator.

Hint - After the use of DDT and other pesticides, bed bugs are very resilient so do everything you can to prevent or help get rid of the problem.

You can bag up clothes, linens, stuffed animals...and try some of the following to kill your pet bed bugs and their eggs.

Put the bags in a freezer. This would mean putting the bagged items outside at below 32 degrees F or in a deep freezer for a few days. Some bed bugs will not die from this, they will simply go into a hibernation mode.

If it is summertime and you can put the bagged items in a enclosed automobile where temps will get to at least 115 degrees F for a several hours...this should cook the little vamps and their eggs.

You can also put all the clothes, pillows, plush toys...into a dryer for no less than 20 minutes on high or average heat. This should also kill all stages of the bed bugs.

To help cut down on the number of bed bugs you are trying to get killed off...VACUUM! You can not get a vacuum into all the crevasses, wall outlets, base boards....So this will not rid you of the problem, it is just a way to help. When done always place the vacuum bag into a sealed plastic bag and dispose of it. I would even take that plastic bag and put it out in the hot car trunk for a day just to make sure.

As far as bed mattresses, couches, and other large articles of furniture go...you may just have to dispose of them and get new once all of the bugs and their eggs are gone from your home.

Like many other pests, the spotted ladybug seeks a warm place as soon as the Fall weather starts to turn. Most of the "regular" lady beetles head for the hills in the fall and shelter in natural cavities. But the multicolored Asian lady beetle likes to spend winters at lower elevations. Our homes are perfect shelters for them. In many areas of the U.S., Asian lady beetles can swarm in very large numbers, to the point that they affect quality of life.

They prefer to cluster on the sides of homes and other buildings, and as temperatures decrease, they eventually work their way into the building through small cracks or crevices, or natural breaks in the window panes, door jams or foundations. Once inside they crawl about on windows, walls, attics, and wall voids. When the heating is turned on, the beetles move into the living areas of the home. So once they gain entry they can be a pest all winter long. They will hibernate until the first warm days of late winter or early spring, and then they seem to come to life again and begin crawling about. Some good news here is that lady beetles are not structure-damaging pests, unlike insects such as termites and carpenter ants. Lady beetles do not chew or bore holes in walls or eat carpet or furniture. And they do not lay their eggs in homes.

Why are they here?

You can thank science and the US government for the large numbers of Asian Lady Beetles, which sometimes are seen in epidemic proportion. This insect was imported and released as early as 1916 in attempts to naturally control certain insect pests. From the 1960s to 1990s, the U.S. Department of Agriculture imported thousands of Asian lady beetles to control agricultural pests, especially in areas that grow pecans and apples. Large numbers of the beetles were released in several states including Georgia, South Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi, California, Washington, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Maryland. In addition, accidental entries have occurred via imported nursery items at ports in Delaware and South Carolina. Some scientists believe that current infestations in the U.S. originated not from these intentional releases, but from beetles accidentally transported into New Orleans on a freighter from Japan. The multicolored Asian lady beetle was first recorded as a pest in houses in 1988 in Abita Springs, Louisiana. Large numbers of lady beetles were reported to be infesting homes and buildings in other parts of the United States in the early 1990s. The beetle has rapidly expanded its range and is now commonly found throughout much of the U.S.

How to "spot" an Asian Lady Beetle (Asian Ladybug)

Adult Asian lady beetles are oval, convex, and about 1/4-inch long. Their color can vary widely from tan to orange to red. They often have several black spots on the wing covers, although on some beetles the spots may be indistinct or entirely absent. Multi-spotted individuals tend to be females while those with few or no spots tend to be males. Most beetles have a small, dark "M" or "W"-shaped marking on the whitish area behind the head.

The multicolored Asian lady beetle adults begin laying eggs on host plants in early spring. Eggs are yellow, oval, and typically are laid in clusters on the undersides of leaves. The immatures (larvae) are often orange and black and shaped somewhat like tiny alligators. Larvae complete their development on plants where their primary food (aphids) is abundant. The non-mobile cocoon, or pupal stage, remains attached to vegetation by its molted skin, but occasionally may be found clinging to exterior walls of buildings. Eggs hatch in about three to five days, and larvae begin searching on plants for aphids and other soft-bodied arthropods on which to feed. Adults and larvae typically feed upon the same prey. Larvae molt four times, becoming larger after each molt, and enter an immobile pupal stage after the last molt.

Last week, it was reported that farms on Long Island were being overrun by stink bugs, threatening to kills millions of dollars in crops. But it's not just farmers who have to deal with these ugly smelly pests. Homeowners throughout the U.S., and especially in New England, are dealing with stink bugs in their outdoor gardens and inside their homes. Entomologists are saying the stink bug problem will make the bed bug resurgence look tame in comparison.

Stink bugs live up to their name. When crushed or disturbed, their glands squirt a foul-smelling liquid described as rancid almonds or moldy fruit. This smell enables them to avoid getting eaten by several species of birds and lizards. If many of them are squashed or pulled into a vacuum cleaner, their smell can be quite apparent.

Stink bugs will release their stench onto most any surface they land and it will last a long time - 6 months or more. This lingering odor attracts other stink bugs that have hibernated nearby, as well as new stink bugs looking for a good place to reside for the upcoming winter. And once your home has been "stunk up," the stink bugs will return year after year. So even though they are gone during the summer, don't be surprised when they return next fall. Since stink bugs like to live in the home for a long time, they often forage into attics and wall voids. Once inside the home, they will become active all through the winter.

But here's the good news: They don't reproduce indoors and they don't feed on much of anything. They do not eat fabric or furniture and they aren't poisonous. In fact, the Vietnamese eat them fried, like popcorn.
