Bed Bug Hysteria - Is It Everywhere?

The hysteria about bed bugs has touched almost every facet of our life and it's not just the general public. This insect is all the rage at pest control conferences all around the United States. I finally got to my breaking point with them yesterday. A local Connecticut newspaper carried a story about this insect and how they had the potential to bring tourism in New York to its knees.

Here's the truth, yes this insect is a true pest that has spread far beyond the wildest imaginations of those like myself who are on the front lines of the pest control industry. The real problem though is that the media has made this story far worse than it has to be. In fact, most homeowners are far more likely to have damage done to their home by termites than to bring home a bed bug. Termites are known to cause more damage than fire, flood and wind combined. Yet, this problem gets very little play except for those who have had termites and know the true cost.

It's true bed bugs have been found in movie houses, stores, multi family housing and other popular places where people gather, but this alone is not a reason to become fearful. If people were able to see the amount of germs that were on the average public railing I'd bet more people would be falling down the stairs. The fact is a railing in a public place carries more germs than I care to think about.

The bed bug issue needs to be kept in perspective and everyone needs to know what your actual chances of having them are. Here are your chances:

You have an extremely high probability of getting bed bugs if:

- You travel frequently, stay in hotels and never check your room for a problem
- Live in multi-family housing AND have a neighbor who has them.
- Stay with a person who has them.
- Let a person stay with you who has a problem.
- Do your laundry in a laundromat
- Have frequent guests that may have a problem at their home. (Ask if you must).
- Leave items in public storage.
- Pick up used items like furniture and clothing and bring them to your home.
- Live in a large metropolitan area and are not aware of the preceding circumstances.

You have a moderate chance of getting bed bugs if:

-You vacation one to two weeks per year and stay in a hotel.
-You go away to college.
-You have frequent deliveries especially of items that are cleaned and re-used
-If you are a service worker and work in a building that has a problem.

You have a very little chance of getting bed bugs if:

-You check your hotel room mattress and furniture BEFORE you bring luggage in.
-Have casual public contact with a person who has bed bugs at their home.
-You shop for clothing in a store, go to a mall or restaurant.
-You go to a movie theater.
-You travel little, know no one with bed bugs or very rarely have strangers in your home.

It's important to know that bed bugs are out there, but it's more important to know and remember that some of the worst things that have ever happened to people are things that have been thought of, but never actually occurred.

Let's all visit New York City.

Bed Bugs Treatment Guide

The Bed Bugs are spreading at phenomenal speed in last few months in almost every big city. For more than 30 years no one had heard anything about them and all of sudden these are all we read in the news and health alert for them should be taken quite seriously too.

They hide very well but the minute they arrive in your home, you start to see their negative effects quite fast. Bird-X Woodpecker Pro Sonic Repeller Review

I would like to review 'Bird-X Woodpecker Pro Sonic Repeller' after using about a month.

Bird-X makes a lot of kinds of deterrent devices, such as Sonic Bird Repellent Devices, Ultrasonic Bird Repellent Devices, Animal Pest Repellent Devices, and Visual Bird Scare Devices. Among Sonic Bird Repellent Devices, I tried Woodpecker Pro which is particularly targeting woodpeckers. I was fighting with woodpeckers for several years. I never had a good luck. After several defeats, I decided to go for this expensive device (about $250). I thought if it works it would be worth while to invest that amount. Listening to a tech support's advice, I purchased a visual deterrent (a prowler owl) and an external speaker together with the sonic device. I installed the main system facing south and the external speaker facing north.

North and south sides are long edges of my house. In this way the sound covers pretty much everywhere of my house. I walked around house to make sure I could hear the sound loud and clear every corner and wall of my house. The sound wave has a relatively long wavelength, so it can bend (diffract) well. Thus, I didn't have a hard time in hearing the sound. I installed the owl on the most targeted wall by woodpeckers. The main device has a lots of settings such as interval, day/night mode, random mode, and 8 choices of different predators recordings (4 for woodpeckers, and 4 other general predators).

For the recordings, one may turn on and off individually. I turned on all 8 recordings and chose settings day time only, interval 5-10 minute, random mode. It seemed to work for about a week, but a woodpecker came and started pecking. The woodpecker didn't seem to be bothered by the sound at all. It was pecking the wall while the recording was being played.

I called the tech support and asked. They told me not to turn on all 8 recordings and suggested me to use 2 or 3 settings and to try to find the recording that works by experimenting. I followed their advice and turned on 3 recordings only. About 3 days, one attacked my house again. I changed the setting. And a few days later other woodpecker was pecking the wall again. And I chose another combination of the recordings, increased the volume of the sound and chose the interval more frequently to 1-4 min. After a few days, a woodpecker was pecking the wall about 3 feet away from the owl. The device simply did not work for me and my house.

It does make a lot of noise. In my case, my house is located in a rural area. So, the device didn't bother my neighbors much. In a crowded city, the noise may be problem even if the device works. Well, wherever you live, if it doesn't work, there is no reason to keep. Although I used longer than 30 days return period, they were quite friendly every time I called and were willing to give me money back.

The bottom line is that you really have to try and experiment to see if it works at your house. In my case, it didn't work. Now, I have to other alternative to protect my house from woodpeckers.

Commercial Pest Control Methods

One of the biggest problems of most commercial buildings, especially restaurants, food chains and hotels are pests. A well-managed commercial establishment starts with three basic commercial pest control methods: Inspection, Sanitation, and Exclusion.

Inspection

Once it was determined that there are pests in your building, the first thing to do is to inspect. This includes knowing where pests are breeding, harboring, or traveling so that you will easily know where you exactly should concentrate applying pesticides. The Places that you need to inspect are trash bins, floor drain, sinks, electrical outlets, electrical boxes, kitchen cabinets, wall voids, crevice, and any hollow tubing on legs of appliances and in on other equipments that have cracks. You can use glue boards near the areas you want to inspect to help you monitor these areas and to help you know what types of pests are living in.

Sanitation

Prevention is better than cure! So to prevent pests from breeding in your building, you need to have a proper sanitation for the whole area. All the suspected places where pests can possibly live in must be cleaned up as regular as possible, and especially before leaving the place overnight. If left uncleaned, any of the areas in your building can pose a pest infestation.

Exclusion

A proper way of pest exclusion is to do it immediately. Want to get rid of pests in your area? Do it now! You have to take a necessary action once you know you have unwanted guests in your building before they become hundreds then hundreds more until they become too hard to eliminate. Included in this method is making sure that weather seals on the windows and doors are tight; caulk each opening that leads to wall voids; and do not leave doors and windows open, most especially if they don't have screen. Eliminating pests outside near your building is also a good preventive option to avoid your commercial area from pest invasion. De-Bugging Your Home - Protecting It Against Termites

Almost every people in this planet hate having termites in their homes. This is because they are known for their ability to cause severe damage on any building structures, most especially those made of wood. Surprisingly, they have the ability to destroy your homes foundation without your knowledge simply because of their nature: tiny and unseen.

Because of their destructive nature to almost anything, people do all they can to protect their homes from it. In here, you will learn more about fighting termites and preventing them from existing within your homes.

Take away that nourishes them

Termites would normally exist where their food exists. They work to decompose anything without life; primarily wood. Hence you should learn to store wood and paper product far from your foundation. If there are rotten wood or stumps around your house, it is best to totally remove them or burn them.

Prevent moisture accumulation

Just like molds, termites are moisture loving. Anything damp would normally draw them to your homes. Hence, you should learn to eliminate moisture from your homes. Start by repairing leaks in your home. Another thing you can do is to maintain proper ventilation. Doing so prevents humidity that could precipitate to moisture build up.

Employment of Physical Barriers and Chemical Barriers

The purpose of having physical barriers is to prevent your home from having close contact to the soil and on areas where termites could possibly dwell in. This involves installation of termite shields. Other physical barriers that can be installed are mesh steels that are perfect for homes built on concrete slab.

Some homes use chemical barriers to keep termites from entering. They may be in forms of liquids, dusts or foams and it can be sprayed on areas of infestation. Two chemicals may be organophosphate in nature or synthetic pyrethroid.

Apply strategic landscaping

The purpose of strategic landscaping is to make it more difficult for termites to enter your homes. Here are some of the ideas:

1. Avoid planting gardens along the side of your home. Should you decide to do so, the planting bed should be created on the bottom of the weepholes.
2. Weep holes should not be covered or concealed. You should avoid planting on this area.
3. Do selective planting. Maintain a good distance from your homes when planting trees. This help avoid destruction of barriers installed caused by overgrowth of trees.

Have your homes inspected

Knowing your home can be the number one defense in protecting it against termites. You will know the appropriate barriers to install in order to have an effective defense against them. Inspection also helps you uncover any hidden agenda of termites. Remember, termites know how to build bridges, meaning they can find their means inside to your home. Frequent inspection allows you to know these kinds of activities and put a stop to it before they open the doors to your home.

You can always do something to protect your homes from termites. Try all of these tips and maintain your home's integrity.

Earwigs: Are They Harmful?

Earwigs are the insects belonging to the order Dermaptera and are found throughout in America, Australia and Eurasia. Dermaptera is one of the smallest insect orders with only 1,800 species comprised in 12 families. Earwigs are characterized by presence of cerci, a pair of forceps like pincers on their abdomen and membranous wings folded under the short forewings hence the name of the order is Dermaptera which means skin wings. Some are parasites of mammals and although they have wings but they fly very rarely. They are nocturnal creatures hiding in the crevices during the day time and coming out in night in order to feed. They feed on small insects and plant material. They are also known to damage our foliage, flowers and valuable crops. They are known to undergo moulting 5 times in a year before they attain adulthood. Some species are also known to exhibit maternal care which is rare among insects. Mothers are known to take care of the eggs as well as the nymphs till they moult twice. As the nymphs grow sexual dimorphism becomes more pronounced which is basically observed in the shape of the pincers in both the sexes.

The fossils of earwigs have been obtained from different places. The name of the order has been derived from a Greek word meaning skin wings and the name was coined by Charles De Geer in 1773. The earwigs have got their name from the Old English word meaning ear insect. They are also known to hide themselves in the ear canal of humans. They are flat insects with elongated bodies measuring 7-50 mm in length although some species attain a length of 80 mm also. They have characteristic forceps like pincers at the end of their abdomens which is curved in males while straight in females. Pincers are used for defence as well as prey capture and remain protected under the wings when not in use. Antennae are thread-like and at least 10 segmented. Forewings are short and leathery while the hind wings are membranous and thin and some are without wings. Hind wings are used as a fan and remain protected under the forewings. The wings are rarely used for flight and the venation of wings is unique. Wingless species are sometimes considered as ectoparasites.

Earwigs are mostly scavengers while some are omnivores or predatory. The abdomen is flexible and muscular and is capable of opening and closing the forceps. Forceps are used for a variety of purposes like prey capture and copulation. They are known to feed upon other arthropods like lice, bluebottle flies, and ripe fruits. They are known to hide in holes, crevices and other dark places during the daytime. They are also seen patrolling the household walls and ceilings. During summers they are seen to roam around the sinks and the bathrooms. Some people believe that during night they crawl over humans and make burrows in the ears. They are harmless to humans. They are hemimetabolous insects and undergo incomplete metamorphosis and moult 4-6 times before attaining adulthood. The developmental stages between the moults are known as instars. The average lifespan of earwigs is about one year.

Mating occurs in the fall and the males and females live in crevices about 2.5 cm deep. After mating the sperms received from males remain inside the body of females for many months before they are fertilized. Before egg laying the males either leaves the crevices by their own or are driven out by the females. The female lays 20-80 pearly white eggs in 2 days. Some species are viviparous. The eggs when laid are oval and pearly white in colour but later on they turn kidney shaped and brown in colour. Eggs are 1 mm long and 0.8 mm wide. They are non-social insects but show maternal care. The mother is known to guard the eggs from the predator and she regularly cleans the eggs so that they may not get contaminated with microbial infection. Eggs are devoid of any scent. Eggs hatch after 7 days and the mother helps the nymphs while they come out by pushing the egg case. After hatching the nymphs spend some time in eating the egg case and then live with the mother. The nymphs resemble their parents but are smaller in size and are guarded by the mother till second moult. The nymphs feed on the food material regurgitated by the mother and on their own moulted skin. If the mother dies before the nymphs are ready to leave the crevice they feed on the dead body of the mother. After moulting for 5-6 times the nymphs become adults. The adults develop pincers as well as wings. Hind wings are made up of elytra which form the hard covering of the beetles.

They are frequently preyed upon by the birds, insectivorous mammals, amphibians, lizards, centipedes and spiders. Bars are also noticed to prey upon them. The primary predators of earwigs are tachinid flies whose larvae are endoparasites of them. Cannibalism is also well known among these animals. It is believed that they evolved about 208 million years ago.

Fall Pest Control Preventative Treatments

Fall is the time of year when pests will try to take up residence and overwinter in your home. Rodents, carpenter ants, queen bees, carpenter bees, cluster flies, lady bugs, and spiders look for shelter. These pests can become established in your home and cause structural damage.

Rodents such as mice or rats will look to seek refuge for the fall and winter. They can reproduce at a rate of 4-7 pups per litter with a gestation period of 19 days. The female will typically produce 5 to 10 litters in her lifetime. The pups become sexually mature as early as 6 to 10 weeks old; therefore, populations can grow rapidly. These rodents gnaw on electrical wires, tear insulation, contaminate food and leave unpleasant odors. Preventive services to winterize your home will eradicate the problem.

When the temperature begins to drop in the fall months, ants will look for ways to seek shelter. Carpenter ants can establish colonies inside the walls of your home and remain active. They will create nesting galleries in wood, causing the homeowner serious structural damage if left untreated.

Typically a wasp, hornet or yellow jacket queen bee will overwinter in the wall voids and attic. Carpenter bees also lay dormant in the winter. In the spring they awaken. The queen bee will look to lay eggs and establish new colonies and the carpenter bee will drill holes in the wood of your home.

Some occasional invaders that can enter your home include lady bugs, cluster flies, and spiders. A thorough inspection, sealing structural gaps, along with conventional and/or organic treatments in the fall will help to resolve your pest control problems.

This is the time of year for fall clean-up around your home. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a way for a home owner to do some preventative treatments around their home. Some of these preventative treatments can include: cutting back trees and bushes from touching your home, sealing up cracks and holes around the foundation, keeping firewood away from the home and covering trash cans. Your professional pest control company can advise you on the best way to implement IPM and eliminate the problem with conventional and/or organic solutions. This will help ensure that new pests do not enter your home.

Could You Be Shopping For Bed Bugs? - Maybe

Is There Really A Problem?

It's hard to turn on the news, listen to the radio, or read a newspaper or magazine without encountering a story about widespread infestations of bed bugs. They've made an alarming resurgence in recent years, and have reportedly been found in several respected establishments in New York City, a favorite shopping destination of the world. Stores affected include Bloomingdale's, Victoria's Secret, Hollister, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Nike.

But bed bugs are not just in New York, and they're not just in large cities. They've been reported in all 50 states, and can be found in rural and urban areas alike. So if these nasty little bugs are showing up in some of the finest stores in America, how can you be sure you're not bringing them home with you when you shop?

How Do Bed Bugs Get Into Stores in the first place?

One of the most widely circulated emails these days warns about clothing being shipped in from other countries where bed bugs are quite common. And naturally, they could spread to warehouses and then get shipped to stores. Snopes.com has suggested that this is probably a bit extreme. The infestation is more likely due to the fact that the bugs have spread due to increased international travel, resistance to present-day pesticides, and lack of awareness on the part of the public. Because the bugs can be found almost everywhere and are not easy to spot, they can make their way into any establishment. That's why it's so important to be on your guard.

In stores, someone may have purchased an item, taken it to a bug-infested home, and later returned it to the store where the bugs were able to spread to nearby items on clothing racks. Once the bugs are in the store and are taken into the dressing rooms, they can settle into the carpet, chairs, or crevices in the walls or moldings. And anyone not taking the following precautions could add to the problem.

Good Advice To Stay Safe While Shopping

Quickly scan the dressing room. You probably won't see the bugs in broad daylight: they prefer dark spaces... which is why they come out at night to feed. The bugs themselves might be hiding in the carpet, near baseboards, in crevices of any upholstered chairs in room, behind the mirror or moldings, or in wallpaper seams. But you might see evidence they've been there, such as shed skins from molting, or little brown specs on the furniture or walls that could be fecal remains. So make sure you hang up both your own clothing and anything you're trying on. Do not place the clothes on the floor, or on an upholstered chair. And don't forget about your purse! Bed bugs love to hide within the dark crevices and seams.Inspect clothing before you try it on. Especially look at seams, any ruffles, pleats, cuffs, pockets, and under collars. If you find any evidence at all of bed bugs, don't just freak out and leave the items in the store. The next person might not be so careful; and in the meantime, the bugs will be able to spread even more. Make sure you speak to a manager who is able to do something about the problem and likely to care enough to do so.If using mass transit (where bed bugs have also been reported), protect your new purchases by keeping the bags sealed and in your lap at all times. Don't lay them on the seat beside you.Protect Yourself At Home

In spite of these precautions, it's always possible that you may have missed some evidence of the bugs or their eggs. Although adult bedbugs can be seen (they resemble apple seeds in size and shape), immature bugs are very difficult to see.

Do not immediately hang up your new purchases in your closet or place them in drawers, possibly infecting your other clothes.Toss them in a hot dryer for 20 minutes. It's been reported that temperature extremes such as heat above 113 degrees F for at least 20 minutes (or cold below 23 degrees Fahrenheit for a minimum of 5 days) can kill these bugs.Don't Let Your Guard Down.

It only takes one bug to create a real nightmare in your world. All this advice may seem a bit extreme at first glance. But the problem is very real. Getting rid of the bugs, once they've moved into your home, is extremely difficult, time-consuming, and expensive. It is so much easier to prevent the problem in the first place.

Flea Traps - You Can Easily Make an Impressive Impact on Parasite Infestations Using Flea Traps

By using flea traps you can make a really positive impact on getting rid of fleas in your home if you are unfortunate enough to have an infestation. They are a fantastic way for you to visually monitor and control any problem you may have and all without affecting the environment, your kids or pets too which is just brilliant.

If you have a cat, dog, rabbit or even chickens, they are all warm blooded vertebrates which makes them (and us too) a prime target for fleas to make a meal of. They need blood as a food source to enable them not only to live but, actually enable them to be able to produce eggs.

So, once they have had a good munch on either your pet or, you see the giveaway red, hard, swollen itchy spots on yourself (which means they have fed on you, revolting I know) the adult female will then be able to get on with the business of laying between 45 to 50 a day and up to 600 in her lifetime.

You will find the eggs will be laid either on your feline or canine pals or their preferred sleeping place and bedding for starters. But, she will also leave them in various nooks and crannies like the joints between floor boards or the crawl space under your house if you have one. Of course, with your pet moving around it goes without saying that any eggs can drop off wherever they go.

To really eradicate these little pests and get them gone for good, it really is important that you 1. Kill the adults 2. Stop the eggs and larva from developing any further. It might seem like a monumental task at the start but, when you look at your flea traps then it really gives you a huge boost to see so many of them dead so quickly and things will not seem so bad.

The way in which they find their food source is very clever, they are attracted by the heat or warmth that warm blooded creatures give off and combined with vibrations from any movement it indicates to these parasites that dinner is nearby. With this in mind the traps have been cleverly designed to give of warmth and vibrate to mimic dinner. But, instead of that they will meet a timely demise never to bother you again.

Because fleas are pretty resilient, it is also pretty important to treat your pet with powder or drops and a collar too. This will ensure that you get rid of any unseen developing eggs, larva or adults. It would be a bit of a shame to see your efforts wasted by missing out on any one important angle of attack.

To really add the perfect finishing touch, by vacuuming everywhere really thoroughly you can make sure they do not stand a chance. Nobody wants to have to deal with such a small, literally irritating nuisance but, with the right help and guidance it really is not difficult.

Knowing how gross they are to look at, it really gives you peace of mind checking your flea traps and watching them deal with a rapidly dwindling number which means you are putting a stop to the problem that these horrible hopping hordes create, just fantastic.
